tyler newman

it was strange to start releasing some work under my own name rather than band or project names. it’s easier to hide behind a made up name that shades the available interpretations, less personal, which is hard to believe given the lyrical content of most of my work. but given how much work i do/did on my own, at some point it just makes sense… otherwise, are you even building a personal brand, bro? ugh, it’s the ultimate yuck, again.

it started happening in 2012, around the first field recording works, and the ‘zonekiller’ film soundtrack. in terms of the “soundtrack” oriented stuff, it only made sense… if it’s good enough for trenty, then it’s probably good enough for me. really the motivation was just to get more work out of it (and good luck with that). but it became something else as the decade rolled out, as we lived through american empire decline. i was more compelled to focus my voice to make some statements that couldn’t have been made through the collaboration with others.

it is also fair to say that, although i cannot justify my entire catalogue of works, i do believe that i have recorded two of my greatest records using my own name: ‘another grey world’ and ‘heartbreak loops’. while they are surely on a different planet, musically, than my collaborative work, both revealed to me a completely new way of exercising the creative impulse.

i do hope to return to the process again soon.
